Local connection: doing details well

It's hard not to think about politics on the heels of a primary campaign, especially this one, which filled the airwaves with vignettes on the candidates. Their opponents attacked them in ways that ranged from substantive to trivial.

Their spouses and children assured us that those being attacked were in fact wonderful people.  We also heard the issues, but only when they could be framed in brief slogans.

In his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman said some forms of communications don't do detail well. His example: you can't discuss philosophy with smoke signals.

As we move toward the primary election, I promise we'll try to bring you the issues. I encourage you to do your own research, too. Hawaii has important issues, most of which cannot readily be boiled down to a bumper sticker.
