WAHIAWA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu police have made an arrest in a sex assault case in Wahiawa last Wednesday. 30-year-old Tyrone Smith Jr was taken into custody Friday afternoon in Wahiawa.

Investigators say that Smith sexually assaulted a woman on the back stairs of the Wahiawa Shopping Center at around 8:00 PM Wednesday night. In addition, police say that Smith took the woman's iPod, jewelry, cash and a bank card after slamming her to the ground.

Police say tips from Smith's roommates led to his arrest. They say one of his roommates contacted police Friday morning to tell them that Smith might be the suspect they were looking for in the case. The roommate told police that Smith had told her he committed a robbery on the stairs behind Goodwill.

The roommate also told investigators that Smith "put his knee on this woman's head" and "took this woman's money and jewelry". She told police that there was a bank card with the victim's name on it in a trash bin. Another roommate subsequently told police that Smith had told her he robbed a woman at the shopping center and showed her a bank card with the victim's name on it.

Smith has been charged with first degree sexual assault.
