HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A strike authorization empowers the local to call a strike but doesn't automatically mean one. The voting for Hilton employees will take place starting this morning at the Convention Center. Local Five did strike the Hyatt after getting a strike authorization, but the strike was more of a demonstration, lasting two shifts on a single day.
The Hawaii State Teachers' Association is suing the state. Governor Lingle wants to switch teachers from one health plan to another... but the one she wants them to switch to, she told the legislature in April was insolvent. The teachers say their current plan isn't, and they don't want to switch.
The coffee borer has some Kona farmers really upset, it has to do with 10 percent Kona blends. AG officials don't think the borer got here through imported beans for blending, but blend opponents are angry that the same AG officials who won't block coffee bean imports, are now talking about quarantine restrictions for Kona beans bound.
Harley Davidson was going to close its assembly line in Milwaukee. But now the teamsters have voted for a new contract that makes it possible for them to stay. Two hundred workers will lose their jobs but 700 will remain employed without having to move.
