HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new pathway is in the works for residents in the Koolauloa community on the North Shore of Oahu. A groundbreaking took place over the weekend for the Malaekahana bike and pedestrian path.
It's a partnership with several island organizations to motivate residents to use the path for their safety and for exercise.
"I was never allowed by my dad to run or walk this stretch because he was so fearful of me getting banged by a car so you know…it's here and we are so excited" said Junior Ah You.
The mile-and-a-half long pathway runs along the mauka side of Kamehameha Highway and features a "bunker" to protect bicyclists and walkers from highway traffic.
The paved path links Laie and Kahuku.
