HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu judge on Monday ordered a new mental evaluation for a woman charged with murdering her 88-year-old mother.
Circuit Judge Richard Perkins in June ruled that Claudia Warner-Gonzales, 62, was mentally unfit to stand trial after two out of three court-appointed doctors determined that she could not understand the proceedings against her. A new panel of mental health experts will now examine her to see if she's ready to proceed.
Prosecutors say the defendant stabbed her mother, Dorothy Stribling, to death inside a home on Rosebank Place in Nuuanu on March 22, 2010. The defense says Warner-Gonzales has a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia, and should not be held criminally responsible for the fatal attack.
