LANIKAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - About 20 kids at the Lanikai Elementary's Junior K program sat out in the hot sun today. Over the weekend, portable tents, tables and tarps were taken from the school.
Lanikai Elementary's Pre-K teacher, Shirley Marks said that August and September are the hottest months for the kids. Since the elementary's cafeteria is too small to fit the entire schools student body, Marks says that she uses the patio as their lunch area. All of the stolen items were donated by the students' parents to help them beat the heat.
"All of it was gone and now our children have to sit out here in the hot sun for lunch and snack. We use this patio all the time and it was really a shame that they would do this to us," said Marks.
The tarp covered the outside sandbox. Mark says that the sandbox needs to be covered to prevent stray cats from playing in it. The tents were being used as a temporary shade solution. The school is trying to obtain building permits for a permanent roof over the pre-k's patio.
