HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 500 homes and condos went to closing on Oahu last month. More than half the condos sold for more than $300,000 as the median price went 6 percent above year-ago levels, and the home price median rose 15 percent to more than $645,000. Two things make Oahu different from the mainland... a stronger economy... and a short supply of housing inventory. But more houses seem to be coming on the market from the Windward side and Ewa.
Japan Airlines says its traffic is way down from last year because of downsizing but its revenue is up 10 percent from year-ago levels. International traffic is up 19 percent at rival ANA. The aerospace blog 'Flying With Fish' reports ANA executives held a board meeting today to launch a discount subsidiary based in Osaka.
In other airlines news... United Airlines reports August traffic was better than last year, in fact outpaced capacity growth, and revenue per available seat was up 18 percent. And European Airline flights are snarled by a strike at Air France. There is a train strike, too, so not many options.
A serious coffee pest has been detected in Kona. The state ag department says the coffee Berry Borer, a small beetle native to central Africa but also found in Central America, has somehow arrived here. It can't be controlled through mere pesticide spraying because it bores into the coffee cherry and the larvae feed on the bean.
