Oahu candidate offers religion-based endorsements

HONOLULU (AP) - A Democratic candidate running for the state House is endorsing candidates for other offices whom he says most exemplify "God's values."

Honolulu City Councilman Gary Okino is challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Blake Oshiro of Aiea, who is openly gay and the chief sponsor of unsuccessful same-gender civil unions legislation.

In an e-mail that the Honolulu Star-Advertiser first reported Thursday, Okino selected Democrats and Republicans who oppose abortion and civil unions, and whom he believes demonstrate "closeness to God."

Among his endorsements are Republican Cam Cavasso over Democratic U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye (ih-NOH'-way) and GOP U.S. Rep. Charles Djou (duh-JOO') over Democratic state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa.
