KAIMUKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - At Sacred Hearts Academy, roses and sunflowers flanked a lei-draped photograph of Kristine and Saundra Cass.
The school held a memorial Mass for the mother and daughter killed by a gunman two weeks ago.
"It was a beautiful day for our student body. A beautiful day for our faculty and staff. We liked it because some of their family friends were here and it certainly helps us bring closure," principal Betty White said.
Saundra was an 8th-grader.
Her classmates wrote simple cards, heartfelt notes to their friend who loved the school and loved to perform in musicals.
"She was just so vivacious and so full of joy in The Sound of Music," White said.
The assembly gave thanks and prayed for the mother and daughter who were inseparable.
"May Kristine and Saundra Cass be embraced in the love of the Lord," the priest said.
There were even prayers for Clayborne Conley, the man who killed them and who took his own life.
Organizers said the Mass closes a sad chapter for the Sacred Hearts family.
"I think the girls were meditating and perhaps reflecting on their own lives, their own parents, and what it means to die," White said.
Saundra was on scholarship. The school awarded a student with a scholarship in her name..
"God gives us strength. He gives us grace to get through these difficult times," White said.
Sacred Hearts called the gathering a celebration. It was also a farewell.
