HONOLULU (AP) - US Senator Daniel Inouye is saying the United States should do its best to help the people of Iraq and Afghanistan to restore their sovereignty and experience peace.
Inouye made the comments in a statement released Tuesday, when President Barack Obama announced the end of US combat operations in Iraq.
The Democratic senator says the announcement reminded him of May 1945, when he laid seriously wounded in an Army hospital in northern Italy as the war in Europe ended. He says he and others thought about the buddies they lost or who were injured.
Inouye says he had similar thoughts during Obama's Oval Office speech Tuesday. He says he's grateful for American troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
