Hawaii receives special security designation for APEC summit

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Homeland Security Department has designated the November 2011 APEC summit in Honolulu as a National Special Security Event (NSSE). Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano informed Governor Linda Lingle by letter on Friday that the event had received the special status.

The designation means that the event, which will be hosted by President Obama and attended by numerous other heads-of-state, will have its security plan overseen by the US Secret Service. It also means that federal funds will offset some the costs incurred locally.

"This will allow us to maximize our resources to ensure that Hawaii is able to showcase our state to the international community as a high-level business and meeting place for the Asia-Pacific region" said Lingle.

The APEC Leaders meeting is expected to attract over 10,000 participants from throughout the Asia-Pacific region including leaders from 21 APEC economies, senior government officials, business leaders, economists, Asia-Pacific experts and worldwide media. Hawaii beat out several other US cities for the right to host the event. It is the first time the United States has hosted since the original summit in 1993.
