HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In the wake of an email sent by the head of the Hawaii Republican Party calling GOP Lt. Governor James "Duke" Aiona the only "righteous" gubernatorial candidate, the Republican frontrunner said that the chairman's comments are viewed by many as divisive.
"While faith is a central part of my life, I'm running for Governor to serve all the people of Hawaii‘ - regardless of their religion" said Aiona in a statement Monday.
In an e-mail originally sent to Hawaii pastors, Hawaii GOP chair Jonah Kaauwai called Aiona the only "righteous" gubernatorial candidate. The email also said that a vote for Democratic gubernatorial contenders Mufi Hannemann and Neil Abercrombie is "succumbing to fear and advancing unrighteousness."
The e-mail cites the Bible and uses other religious language to warn pastors that Hannemann allegedly is trying to use visits to church services as a way of boosting his support in the September 18 primary election. Kaauwai's e-mail says Aiona's campaign is "Christ's opportunity."
