New Shriners Hospital in Honolulu is dedicated

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Shriners Hospital for Children dedicated its new hospital on Punahou Street Thursday. The hospital has been six years in the making. Many local dignitaries were on hand, including Senators Dan Inouye and Dan Akaka.

Shriners is the only pediatric orthopedic facility in Hawaii to offer care at no charge to children or their families. The hospital is funded by donations from members of the community.

"Well now we're a 24 bed hospital. We downsized from a 40 bed hospital to 24. What we did was we expanded the outpatient clinic area so what we're able to do is serve many, many more patients. We've already increased the number of patients we're able to see by 100% said   Iwalani Dayton, Shriners Hospital Director of Development.

Shriners provide service to children with orthopedic conditions, post-burn injuries, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip.
