HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Air National Guard members said a fond aloha to a powerful military jet, the F-15 fighter. The very last training session using the F-15's was held at Hickam Wednesday morning.

The F-15's are being retired after 23 years in favor of the new F-22 Raptor. Lieutenant Colonel James Sage says he's personally been flying the F-15's for 16 years, so saying goodbye is bittersweet.

"We've been flying this aircraft here for 23 years now so it's just an honor and a privilege to been able to fly this aircraft here in Hawaii… we are looking forward to flying the F-22, but at the same time, it's kind of like saying goodbye to a good friend after flying this aircraft for so many years" said Sage.

The final F-15 is scheduled to leave the islands on September 1.
