WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Fans of a legendary surfer gathered in Waikiki Tuesday morning to celebrate his birthday.

Duke Kahanamoku was born exactly 120 years ago. Tuesday's sunrise celebration near his statue included entertainment as well as a lei draping ceremony. Those who knew the Olympic medalist are thrilled to see his legacy live on.

"Duke of course is Hawaii's legendary ambassador of aloha. He's an iconic figure, not only to the people in Hawaii, but all over the world," Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, Tim Guard said.

This is just part of the 9th Annual Duke's Oceanfest which runs through Saturday.

Tuesday night, nine people are being inducted into the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame.
