New Big Island roadway

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A major milestone for a Big Island highway, built entirely from special federal funds.

Heavy equipment cleared the vegetation and connected the Ane Keohokalole Highway to Palani Road.

The three mile, 35-million dollar stretch of highway is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Mayor Billy Kenoi says the new route will relieve traffic congestion and connect residents on the Kona side to more job opportunities.

Officials say the entire highway project is on schedule to be completed in two years.
