23-year old man shot by police

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man is in critical condition Sunday evening after a Honolulu police officer shot him in the abdomen.

Police say around 6:00 a.m., they got a call about a fight on Keeaumoku and Rycroft Streets.

Officers checked it out, saw nothing, then heard shots coming from Sheridan Street.

There, they found a 23-year old man shooting at four others trying to run away.

Investigators say the man was told to put the gun down, and when he did not comply, an officer fired at him.

"He handled the weapon in a way which placed the officer at risk and the officer deemed the actions of the suspect as threat of deadly force and took appropriate action", said Assistant Police Chief Kevin Lima.

The man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical, but stable condition.

The officer was not hurt.

Police found a handgun at the scene.

They're also looking for another suspect who took off.

He is described as an Asian man, about 5 foot 7, 150 pounds, with black hair.

The officer who shot him has been placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure until an internal investigation is done.

We're told the officer has 14 years with the department.
