Honolulu Zoo welcomes a new lion

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - City officials unveiled the newest member of the Honolulu Zoo Friday. His name is Ekundu, and he is an African lion. The 365-pound male arrived in Honolulu on July 1 courtesy of the San Diego Wild Animal Park. He's one of four cubs in a litter. Now nearly three years old, there are already plans to find Ekundu a female companion.

"And the good news is that we're going to be bringing a second lion in in November, a female so that they can breed and have cubs and we can actually grow this program, protecting the species" said Kirk Caldwell, acting Honolulu mayor.

Ekundu, which means red in Swahili, moved into the newly renovated lion exhibit. It's been more than a year since the zoo has had a lion. The last were sisters Samantha and Ethel Louise, who died in 2009 at 23-years-old.
