HONOLULU (AP) - Representative Charles Djou of Hawaii is dismissing the significance of a poll indicating an increasing number of Americans think Obama is Muslim. The Pew Research Center's survey released Thursday found 18% of those questioned believe Obama is Muslim and 34% believe he's Christian. Since March, the percentage of the former has risen and the percentage of the latter has declined.
The White House has reiterated that Obama is Christian. Asked about the poll Thursday, Djou said he's heard similar numbers about Americans "who believe in UFOs." The Republican lawmaker says a poll can be produced to show just about anything. He also says such issues are extraneous to his central campaign themes, which is the economy and jobs.
