'Super Sucker' and urchins restoring Kaneohe reefs

KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - An invasive algae may have met its match on Oahu. For the last year, biologists have been using a seaweed vacuum dubbed "The Super Sucker" to pull clumps of seaweed from reefs in Kaneohe.

Researchers found that putting native sea urchins on the reef helps keep the alien seaweed from returning.

The urchins just munch away.

The next step is to see if the urchins can eat enough algae to make "The Super Sucker" unnecessary.
