A flash flood in 2004 caused widespread damage.20 students trapped by the rising water had to break a window to escape. A drainage system is now in place to prevent flooding in the building, but employees are still working to salvage some of the rare maps and photos.
"We lost all of our flood funding in June 2008 so we're using existing staff to clean the rest of the maps and aerial photographs so it's taking longer because we have to use the existing staff rather than being able to hire additional people to be able to do it" said Gwen Sinclair of the library's Government Documents and Maps Department.
"I would say that the people down here had to go through an awful lot of bad times before we ended up with a nice place to work" said facilities manager Steve Pickering.
The library is holding an open house on Sunday August 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Tours are available every 15 minutes.
