Hawaii lawmakers hold several off-session hearings

HONOLULU (AP) - Public hearings on Hawaii's application for federal education money, the state Sheriff Division and budgetary shortfalls are being held at the Capitol on Tuesday.

Senate and House education committees will join for a review of Hawaii's education reform plan and its pitch to obtain a federal "Race to the Top" school reform grant.

A joint committee on public safety will question the Sheriff Division about an audit that found it struggles to uphold law enforcement responsibilities.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee will ask the Department of Budget and Finance for an update on programs and potential money problems.
