HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Despite all the talk of alternative energy, Hawaii imported three percent more oil in the first seven months than during the same months last year. A monthly state report says the Tesoro and Chevron refineries in Kapolei collectively produced three times as much jet fuel as during the same seven months of 2009.

Another large solar panel installation, Sunetric says it will build a 600 kilowatt photovoltaic system on the roof of Y-Hata in Kalihi. It's a $2 million job to replace 22 percent of Y-Hata power needs.

Hawaii retail vacancy rose slightly in the second quarter to a new four-year high. CB Richard Ellis Hawaii says Oahu vacancy is only 2.4, but neighbor islands have so much empty space, the statewide retail vacancy rate is 4.2.

More health care plans in the red. Kaiser lost $5 million and HMAA lost most of $4 million in the second quarter. Both reporting their investments shrank. The state pension fund had the same problem in the spring quarter.

Mutual Publishing has a new local title out, A History of Punchbowl, Arlington of the Pacific. It mentions the famous people interred there, including Ernie Pyle, Patsy Mink, Ellison Onizuka, Spark Matsunaga and Hilo Hattie.
