Honolulu Zoo upgrading elephant exhibit

HONOLULU (AP) - The Honolulu Zoo is breaking ground on its Asian elephant tropical forest exhibit. The $6 million project includes two exhibit areas, a 55,000-gallon pool, relocation of existing trees, new walkways, landscaping, hydraulic gates and rock work.

The new exhibit will have 1.4 acres of viewing space. It will take about a year to complete once construction begins in September.

Acting Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says the exhibit will create a spacious, natural environment for the elephants and a larger viewing area for zoo visitors.

About 600,000 people a year visit the Honolulu Zoo.
