Overdraft fees ban: new rules in effect

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The days of surprise overdraft fees are over. New rules went into effect Sunday, banning banks from automatically enrolling customers in overdraft protection programs.

Banks were prohibited from automatically enrolling new customers starting in July.

This rule goes a step further by dropping the service for existing customers who never asked for it.

You can still choose to have the protection, but you need to talk to your bank.
