HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu man faces up to 10 years in prison after being convicted of a violent purse snatching in Kakaako.

John Leonard Gomes was on trial for first-degree robbery. After nearly two days of deliberations, a jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree robbery.

Investigators say a 34-year-old woman was in a parking structure on Ilaniwai Street in April 2009, when Gomes attacked her and took off with her purse. The victim, who suffered a large gash to her head, sought help at Island Fender across the street.

Three auto body technicians chased down the fleeing suspect and held him until police arrived. The Good Samaritans were among the witnesses who testified during the four-day trial.

Sentencing is set for October 20th.
