Report: Average Hawaii consumer has almost $9,000 of credit card debt

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii has the third highest amount of credit card debt in the country. That's according to a new report from the website Credit Karma. In July, the average consumer in the islands had more than $8,900 in debt. The national average is around $7,800.

Last year it was much lower, at about $7,700. On the positive side, the average credit score here is 675, seven points higher than the national average. Analysts say this shows that spenders in Hawaii are managing their debt relatively well.

The state with the highest credit score is New Jersey with an average score of 687. The lowest was Arkansas with 638.
