KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - In our ʻÂhaʻi segment this morning, we visit again with Hawaiian Language Professor, Puakea Nogelmeier, to talk story about Kalihi. It's a place common to many of us and Puakea shares some interesting bits of insight.

Aloha kakahiaka kâkou. ʻOiai he wali nô ka ʻôlelo Hawaiʻi iâ Puakea, nui kona ʻimi ʻike ʻana ma nâ moʻolelo kahiko e naʻauao hou mai ai.

As a fluent speaker, Puakea finds gems of knowledge in old Hawaiian stories.

After moving to Kalihi, I wanted to know more about its history, it's natural beauty.

ʻOiai kamaʻâina ka nui o kâkou iâ Kalihi Kai a holo aku i laila i kçlâ me kçia lâ, he awâwa uluwehi a ua nui nô ʻo Kalihi e holo ana i uka loa a hiki aku i nâ Koʻolau.

While many travel lower Kalihi daily, Kalihi is a beautiful lush and rainy vallley that runs all the way to the Koʻolau.

ʻO Poʻolipilipi, ʻo ia ka ua kaulana o Kalihi.

No ka nui hewahewa o ka ua, liplipi auaneʻi ke poʻo.

A ua ʻike maka au i ia poʻolipilipi i ʻaneʻi.

Poʻolipilipi is the famous rain of Kalihi.

It's so hard, it's like it chiseling, lipilipi, your head, poʻo. Poʻo-lipilipi.

Pçlâ hoʻi e uluwehi loa ai ʻo uka o kçia ʻâina e holo ana i waena o nâ ahupuaʻa ʻo Moanalua me Kahauiki i ka ʻaoʻao komohana me Kapâlama me Nuʻuanu i ka hikina me kona mau kualapa ma nâ ʻaoʻao ʻelua.

This creates this lush valley between Moanalua and Kahauiki to the west and Kapâlama and Nuʻuanu to the east, barriered by its two ridges.
