Big Island company plans to extract oil from algae

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Big Island company has a green alternative to drilling for Petroleum. Cellana plans to harvest oil from Algae.

Here's how it works.

Scientists expose the algae to the sun, and add in nutrients and carbon dioxide.

They then remove water and extract oil from the algae.

Cellana hopes to someday create biofuel on a large commercial scale, but it could be years before the process is cost-effective.
