HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of paddlers from across the state gathered at Keehi Lagoon on Saturday for the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championships.
This is the 60th year of this event and it's being hosted by the Molokai Canoe Racing Association.
The weather was near-perfect and so were the ocean conditions. A men's final went down to the wire and got so intense, a bench in a canoe broke off.
But they were able to finish, just not in first-place. One participant says these races definitely bring out the best in everyone.
"It's pretty exciting, over the season, you train so hard and then you come over here and you got everyone else who's been training just as hard, in your face, ready to go at you, so it's time to put our hard work into motion," Race participant Kekupaa Naeole said.
