Kauai firefighters battle 2nd brush fire in Niumalu

LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Fire crews on Kauai battled a wildfire Saturday at Niumalu in an area next to the Puakea Golf Course.

The fire was reported shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday. Units from the Lihue, Kalaheo and Kapaa fire stations responded, along with the Kauai Fire Department helicopter, which took water from the golf course near the 13th hole.

Kauai officials said the golf course remained open, but golfers were being diverted from the area nearest the fire, which is close to the 14th hole. Roads in the area were reported to be open.

This is the second fire in the Niumalu area in as many days. A brush fire erupted Friday afternoon in an area near Kauai High School. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
