State lawmaker opposes tropical fish collecting

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A state lawmaker from the Big Island says he plans to introduce a bill to ban tropical fish collecting in Hawaii waters.

Democratic Rep. Josh Green calls it "a simple bill" on a controversial issue.

Green says the legislation is needed because the number of fish in Big Island and Maui waters has decreased.

He says it's time to restore the Gold Coast, a reference to the nickname West Hawaii was given for the many yellow tangs along its coastal reef.

Several fish collectors oppose a ban.

Kona tropical fish collector Paul Masterjohn called it bill "politically motivated and uneducated."

The owner of Stockly's Aquariums of Hawaii, Bill Stockly, says the measure is "extreme and not warranted."
