WAILUKU, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – Fire officials on Maui report that the fire near the Kehalani subdivision is now under control, although not before coming within 50 feet of homes. Fire crews were still on scene Friday afternoon, mopping up hot spots and dousing flare-ups.

The blaze was first reported shortly before 12:00 AM Friday. Police evacuated nearby homes as a precaution, but let residents return early Friday morning. Several developments were evacuated including the Iliahi townhomes, the Ohia at Kehalani and the villas.

"It's never easy to face the very real threat of fire in such a dense urban area, and our county personnel and community partners did an incredible job of keeping our community safe" said Mayor Charmaine Tavares.

There were no structures damaged. The fire burned an estimated 60 acres. The cause of the blaze is under investigation
