KAHULUI, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - Zippy's is hailing the manager of its restaurant on Maui after he stopped the potential release of his employees' confidential information.

The Zippy's in Kahului is one of at least five restaurants in Hawaii that received calls from a man claiming to be a health inspector investigating a complaint. The caller tried to arrange an inspection of the site, but the state Department of Health says it does not call restaurants prior to inspections or when investigating complaints.

Similar scams are occurring on the mainland in an apparent effort to obtain sensitive employee data.

"I think it's really great that our store manager was aware of the proper protocols and did stop it while he could because protecting the employee information is very important," Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki, Zippy's Restaurants, said.

The DOH says restaurants should always make sure that anyone claiming to be a health inspector has the proper identification.
