KAUANAKAKAI, Molokai (HawaiiNewsNow) - It took three months, but the friendly isle is now more energy friendly. On Molokai, residents switched out 36,000 bulbs for energy efficient compact fluorescent lights.

Blue planet foundation donated the CFL's but community volunteers distributed the new bulbs, spread the word, and made the switch. This change will reduce the energy on lighting for the island by 75%.

"So the whole idea was basically to provide energy efficiency ideas for the people and give them the tools and the resources. Then that will in fact save energy and of course save money for the people, and that's where we got inspired and involved with them," said special projects director for Blue Planet, Francois Rogers.

"We're seeing already changes between $10 and $20 a month just by changing out the light bulbs. So I think by putting money back in their pockets they're able to re-purpose that into education and to other social issues that they have on the island," said Rogers.

Blue Planet hopes this effort can be an example for other single family island communities who want to achieve a similar goal.
