WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu man accused of beating a paramedic remains locked up at the Honolulu Police Department's main cellblock.

Officers arrested John Mathis, 40, on suspicion of second-degree assault and for two contempt warrants.

Investigators say Mathis became combative while being transported to a hospital by emergency medical personnel in a city ambulance Tuesday. He's accused of punching a 29-year-old female paramedic in the chest three times.

The suspect is awaiting charges.
