Alaska Airlines expands Hawaii plans

SEATTLE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Alaska Airlines, which has shifted 15% of its capacity to Hawaii routes, announced yet another Hawaii route Monday.

The Seattle-based carrier said in January it will begin nonstop service to Honolulu from Bellingham, Wash., a city of 80,000, or twice the size of Hilo, north of Seattle and close to Vancouver, B.C.

Hawaii tourism marketers say some of the traffic Hawaii has been getting from Seattle has actually been Canadians who fly here from American airports to avoid Canadian aviation taxes.

Alaska has extensive service to Hawaii either in effect now or scheduled to launch later this year from Seattle, Portland, Oakland and other cities.

Some of it involved moving aircraft into Hawaii service that had been flying to resorts in Mexico.
