HONOLULU (AP) - The state Department of Education is laying off about 40 clerical staff workers as part of an effort to save $142 million in the coming school year.
Ninety-day notices went out last week.
The department decided last month to eliminate a total of 400 positions, most of which are vacant, to save about $15 million.
Interim state Schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi says employees who face layoffs will get job transition help and access to counseling services.
Hawaii Government Employees Association spokeswoman Jodi Endo Chai says the union will be working with the department to ensure the layoff procedure is followed.
