Howzit Howard: Hawaii visitors

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Half the people who visited Hawaii in June, came to Oahu. But the other 343,000 people who visited neighbor islands, two out of three spent their entire vacations on those islands. Only a third of them were Oahu visitors making side trips.

The Natural Resources Defense Council says Hawaii beach closing fell last year, which sounds like good news. But it blames drought, less toxic runoff. Maui has one of the nation's highest rates of staph infection and MRSA.

Tesoro swings to a $67 million profit for the spring quarter. Tesoro owns the larger of Hawaii's two refineries and saw a small increase in second quarter throughput here.

Southwest Airlines' spring profit jumped over $100 million. The discount carrier did it by doing less discounting, raising average fares 15 percent.

Northrop Grumman wins a $12 million contract for security surveillance work. Five percent of the work is to be done in Hawaii and 20 percent in Japan.

PKL Services wins a Marine Corps plane maintenance contract, $16 million. Five percent of the work is to be done at Kaneohe.
