HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii Carpenters Union announced Thursday that it is endorsing Democrat Mufi Hannemann to serve as the state's next governor. The state's largest construction union said it is supporting Hannemann because of his commitment to working families.
"We decided that the best candidate would be the one who has been tested under fire, who has the executive experience, who has had to make the hard decisions, and who's capable of taking a step up to the next level" said Ron Taketa.
"We have huge challenges before us, none more important than putting this economy back on track" said Hannemann,
More than half of the union's 7,000 members are unemployed. In the past, the union has endorsed both Hannemann and Abercrombie in different races.
Hannemann's campaign also picked up endorsements in April from Hawaii's Sheet Metal Workers Local 293, International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District 50, Drywall Tapers Finishers Local 1944, and the Operating Engineers Local 3. Those unions cited Hannemann's support of Oahu's rail transit system as a key factor.
