HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)-Cable service is restored to Maui county and the Big Island, but it will take weeks to put that service back onto the regular fiber-optic cable. Oceanic has summoned a cable-repair ship to the scene of the failure,which is off the coast of Kihei. Splicing fiber-optic cable is a hit-or-miss procedure. First,you float the two ends to the surface, cut them clean, and melt the fiber-optic glass together. And you keep doing it, over and over again, until it carries a signal again.
     The Association of Pacific Island local governments has had people meeting in the Philippines this week to plan for their annual conference this December in Honolulu. Hundreds are expected, at about the same time as the Honolulu marathon, so I figure Waikiki hotels will be *running* full.
