Feds investigating death of monk seal pup found off Niihau

HONOLULU (AP) — Federal officials are investigating the death of an endangered Hawaiian monk seal pup found on a beach on Niihau.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokeswoman Wende Goo says the carcass was too badly decomposed to remove it after it was discovered last weekend.

In June, the state enacted a law to help protect monk seals after three of them were found killed on Kauai and Molokai in recent years.

The new law makes it a felony to harm monk seals. It allows for fines of up to $50,000 and five years imprisonment for those who harm them.

Officials said stiffer penalties were needed to protect monk seals from harassment and death.
