Fisherman who harassed NOAA observer prosecuted and deported

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fisherman who admitted to sexually harassing a NOAA fisheries observer was deported to the Philippines. Tito Nava was first mate on the American ship, Captain Millions IV.

After the victim complained to authorities, Nava confessed to harassing her while they were aboard the fishing vessel in April and May. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to his time served of 12 days and deported.

"My hope is that this successful prosecution will have a lasting effect on the US fishing fleet in the Pacific and that no future US government observer will ever feel apprehensive about boarding any fishing vessel" said Special Agent in Charge Bill Pickering.

The case was investigated by NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement and prosecuted by the US Attorney in Honolulu.
