SAND ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Friends and family of the famed master navigator Mau Piailug gathered to say a final farewell to the Satawal native.
Lei adorned the Hokulea which Piailug captained as part of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. And on Saturday, crew members of the vessel were preparing it for a journey to Kauai, scattering flowers at sea in honor of Piailug.
Those who knew him say he took others under his wing, teaching them the ancient way finding techniques.
"How we're honoring him with this sail is continuing to share it with each other and our keiki and bringing hoku, Hokulea throughout the Hawaiian islands and sharing that knowledge that he passed on, we're really, really honored by that", said Hokulea navigator-in-training Stephanie Fitzgerald.
Piailug died in Satawal on July 12.
