Federal law helps Hawaii's unemployed

HONOLULU (AP) - State will notify people who are potentially eligible for emergency unemployment compensation benefits under a new law signed by President Barack Obama.

Officials say there is an enormous increase in additional EUC claims to be processed.

So the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations asks the public to wait for their notices and follow instructions before contacting their local unemployment insurance claim offices.

The department said Friday that it may take several weeks to process over 10,000 retroactive claims and 45,000 weekly claim certifications that date back to May.

It says unemployed workers who exhausted their regular unemployment insurance benefits after May 22 through July 17 can retroactively file new claims.
