HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Minority-owned enterprises constitute more than half of all local-owned businesses, 20 percentage points ahead of number two California. A new Census report says 47 percent of Hawaii businesses are Asian-owned and nine percent are Hawaiian-owned. That compares with native Alaskans owning 10 percent of Alaskan businesses, and Native Americans owning six percent of businesses in Oklahoma.

Hawaii credit card debt rose slightly from May to June. Credit Karma says the average household carries more than nine thousand dollars in credit card debt.

Honolulu-based commercial date systems has won a five-million dollar GSA contract to do homeland security work. Basically password protection of access to sensitive government computer files. CDS is the largest IT company based in Hawaii and has sales of $90 million a year.

The USDA Hawaii Field Office says the dry side of the Big Island is now official under "exceptional drought," a designation not currently in force anywhere else in the United States. The water level in the Waimea irrigation system is now below 49 feet. But there has been a small increase in Oahu's Waimanalo reservoir.
