OAKLAND, CA (AP) - A toddler whose father allegedly threw her into oncoming traffic in Oakland is recovering from burns and scrapes at home. Police arrested the father, 21-year-old John Taylor, after Saturday's incident.
Police say an off-duty officer saw Taylor shaking his 18-month-old daughter on the side of the road. The child then ended up in a traffic lane, where a car stopped just as it was about to run over her.
The officer chased Taylor, who fought with other motorists trying to stop him. He was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty, battery on a police officer and other charges.
The child suffered only minor injuries.
Her mother, Alena Bartholemew, says she believes Taylor only threw the child into traffic to get her out of danger because he was under attack. Oakland police are still investigating.
