Big Island police break up cockfight

KALOPA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Seven dead roosters, $754 dollars in cash, a gun, some ammunition and a poultry scale. That's what Big Island police found after breaking up a cockfight in Hamakua at 8:15 Thursday night. About 75 people were there when the vice squad showed up at a home in Kalopa.

Police arrested two brothers. Ernest and Erwin Valenzuela, 28 and 26, are both charged with gambling and ten counts of cruelty to animals. Two women were also arrested but have been released pending further investigation.

Officers say the dead roosters had all been injured and five of them still had the gaffs on their legs.
