KALALAU, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - Firefighters and the US Coast guard airlifted a hiker from Hanakapiai Beach. A visiting Coast Guard pilot happened to be on Kalalau trail and spotted the 18-year-old around 10:30 PM Thursday night. The man suffered from heat exhaustion and possibly went into shock.
The pilot hiked out of the valley and called 911. He then called the Coast Guard station in Honolulu and asked for their assistance in the emergency. A joint rescue operation between Hanalei firefighters and the Coast Guard carried the hiker out of the valley.
The victim was airlifted to Lihue Airport around midnight and transported to Wilcox Hospital. His current condition is unknown.
