"Nuʻu" is a peak and "anu" is cool.

It was a home to the gods of old. Today, we see Nuʻuanu as a large valley between Mânoa and Kapâlama.

Eia naʻe ma ka moʻolelo o Keaomelemele, ʻaʻole ia he awâwa ma kçlâ manawa. He kualapa e piʻi ana i kçlâ mauna o Konahuanui.

But in the tale of Keaomelemele, it was a ridge leading up to Konahuanui.

ʻO Konahuanui kahi kiʻekiʻe loa o nâ Koʻolau a he mea hula ʻo Keaomelemele i hânai ʻia e nâ akua o ia wahi o Nuʻuanu, Waolani, me Konahuanui mâ.

Konahuinui is the highest peak in the Koʻolau's. Keaomelemele was a hula dancer raised by the gods of the area.

i kona ʻuniki ʻana ma muli o kona haʻa ʻana a hoʻokuʻikuʻi i ka ʻâina, ua hoʻoâ ʻia o Nuʻuanu a he awâwa.

The power of her dancing split Nuʻuanu ridge into a valley.

Wahi a kekahi moʻolelo ma laila nô i kûkulu ʻia ka heiau mua loa.

(puakea)

Waolani is area on the ʻEwa side of Nuʻuanu, where Oʻahu Country Club is.

Those living here had peculiar powers, like the meneuhune and the mû. The mystery of this place kept people away.

Nui nâ moʻolelo no Nuʻuanu. He wahi pana. He ʻâina moʻolelo o Nuʻuanu.
